Was that – a bird? A plane? No, it’s…

Here are some of the weirdest things to “rain down” from the sky – and their even weirder explanations.

Meat

In 1876 in the town of Olympian Springs, Kentucky, residents reported chunks of red meat falling from the sky. According to the first report in Scientific American, two men tasted the meat, explaining that it tasted like lamb or deer. The kind of meat was never confirmed, nor the explanation for the occurrence. Locals believed it may have come from a group of birds regurgitating the meat.

Golf Balls

“Dozens and dozens” of golf balls were reported to be dropping out the sky in Punta Gorda, Florida in 1969. The event was likely cause by a waterspout picking up golf balls from a pond nearby a golf course, which unfortunately resulted in the streets being littered by the misplaced balls.

Spiders

On two separate occurrences, one in Australia in 2015 and also in Brazil in 2019 – spiders appeared to fall from the sky in an event called ballooning, where spiders use specific weather conditions to travel large distances. The act of ballooning is apparently quite common, however these ‘spider rain’ events were caused by a mass occurrence, which is very rare.

Gold

In March of 2018, approximately 200 bricks of Russian gold were accidentally dropped in Siberia by an ascending plane. The plane was said to be carrying an estimated $378 million in gold, platinum, and diamonds. The police reported that they recovered all the gold.

Blood

Red-tinged liquid reportedly fell from the sky in Zamora, Spain in 2014, which had locals concerned as it closely resembled blood. The cause of this unsightly event was attributed to microscopic algae that was present in the water, which produced a red pigment in the rain.
